Hands On Experience With Local Issues
I have been working on major issues facing Monterey County since 2013, with a focus on Transportation, Affordable Housing, Water, and Community Development.
Transportation Agency for Monterey County: I was part of the team that delivered over $300 million in highway improvements with the Prunedale Improvement Project, San Juan Road Interchange, and Holman Highway 68 Roundabout. I also led the planning team for the Pajaro to Prunedale Corridor study that identified needed safety and congestion relief projects for Prunedale, Royal Oaks, Las Lomas, and Pajaro. I currently serve on the Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee, advocating for North Monterey County's active transportation needs.
City of Monterey Housing Programs: I helped lead the effort to establish Monterey's first Emergency Rental Assistance Program to help low income families stay in their homes during the COVID-19 pandemic. I am also leading the team to redevelop four city-owned properties into new affordable housing, adding up 150 new, permanently affordable homes in downtown Monterey. I also manage the City's community development block grant program, first time home buyer program, and grants for local non-profits serving at-risk members of our community.
Salinas Valley Basin Groundwater Sustainability Agency: I am currently serving as the Alternative Board Director and Alternate Advisory Committee member representing the Castroville Community Services District. This seat advocates for small water systems and disadvantaged communities. I also serve on the Langley sub-basin committee, providing input on the development of the Langley sub-basin plan for sustainably managing the groundwater in Prunedale.
North County Recreation and Park District: I currently serve as Chair of the Board of Directors. During my time on the Board, the District has been successful in receiving over $250,000 in Community Development Block Grants that have paid for park improvements and repairs to the Recreation Center in Castroville. The District has also increased programming and community events, including the annual Crab Feed and Snow Play Day.
Hartnell College: In 2016, the voters of Monterey County passed Measure T, a $167 million Bond to support Hartnell College. As a graduate of Hartnell, I'm honored to now serve as Chair of the Measure T Citizen Oversight Committee. The Committee is charged with overseeing the fiscal management of $167 million in Measure T projects, including development of the main campus improvements and expansions in Castroville, Salinas, Soledad, and King City.
Castroville Land Use Advisory Committee: The Committee reviews all proposed developments for Castroville to ensure they comply with the Castroville Community Plan. I'm honored to serve as the current Chair of the Castroville Land Use Advisory Committee. During my time on the Committee, I have recommended approval for numerous housing projects, as well as proposed business developments within Castroville.
North County Chamber of Commerce: Focused on serving Castroville and Prunedale, the Chamber offers a variety of benefits for all businesses large and small. As a Board member and past Board President, I work with the Chamber to promote local North County Businesses and host community events, such as the annual Salsa and Chili Cookoff.
Salinas Valley Recycles: As a member of the Citizen Advisory Committee for the Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority, I am working with a team of community members and Agency staff to find a new trash and recycling transfer center for Salinas to replace the existing Sun Street Transfer Station. Other initiatives the Committee works on include developing strategies to comply with new recycling requirements for food waste, as well as organics composting programs to extend the life of our local landfills.
Castroville Cemetery District: I'm proud to serve on the Board of Directors for the Cemetery since 2019, and am currently Board Chair. The Castroville Cemetery District provides cemetery and burial services for the unincorporated communities of Castroville, Moss Landing, Prunedale, Oak Hills, and Elkhorn. The District’s cemetery in Moss Landing is the only public cemetery in the North County area.
Castroville Coalition: The Castroville Coalition catalyzes change by building consensus around common goals and advocating for the good of the Castroville Community. The Coalition is the sole non-profit dedicated to the betterment of Castroville. I'm serving on the Coalition's Board of Directors since 2017.
